Cashier/Insurance Volunteer Program

The UHS Cashier/Insurance Volunteer Program offers students experience with the business side of the healthcare industry. Duties of our volunteers include:

  • Entering insurance information into patient medical records
  • Checking the status of insurance claims
  • Posting insurance payments
  • Answering student's questions
  • Accepting payments from patients

Volunteers can expect to gain a great deal of insight into general medical business office practices and knowledge about health insurance industry standards.

Cashier/Insurance volunteers must commit to working at least four hours per week for two long semesters (fall & spring).

Regular attendance and professional conduct is required. Volunteers who perform satisfactorily at the end of the two-semester commitment may continue to participate if they wish. Summer participation is available for experienced volunteers.

Our program focuses primarily on providing a rewarding learning opportunity for the volunteer. Our volunteers interact directly with patients and insurance company contacts while supporting the daily operations of the Cashier/Insurance Office. We take great pride in our volunteers. As a part of the university community, we value our role as mentors of tomorrow's healthcare professionals and consumers.

The cashier/insurance volunteer application for the 2014-2015 academic year is now open.

Interested in applying?

UHS accepts applications each spring semester for volunteers to start at the beginning of the following fall semester. Qualified applicants are interviewed and selected each April.

Lower- and upper-division undergraduates and graduate students from any major or background are welcome to apply. A major in health-related field, business, finance, or accounting is helpful but not required.

New and returning volunteers begin their mandatory training each semester before classes begin. Volunteers can expect to receive additional on-the-job training and increased responsibility as skill and proficiency grow. See the application for training dates.

The online application will be available until midnight 4/10/2014. (Applications will not be accepted after midnight on 4/10/2014.) Interviews will be conducted during the week of 4/14/2014. Volunteers who are selected will be expected to attend the mandatory orientation and training sessions on:
Thursday, 8/21/14 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and Friday 8/22/14 from 8:30am - 4:00pm
