Safer Spring Break

Messaging Considerations

  • Recognize that Spring Break plans look different for everyone. Some people might stay on campus, some may go home and others might travel.
  • When discussing Spring Break, emphasize the importance of using the time to rest and refresh as a way of promoting mental health and preventing burnout.
  • Emphasize the importance of sun safety if spending time outside. Helpful tips include regularly applying sunscreen, staying hydrated, minimizing sun exposure from 10am to 4pm and wearing light-colored and lightweight clothing.
  • Openly discuss safer behavior around substance use, such as having a plan to get home safely, counting number of drinks consumed, eating before drinking, not mixing substances, etc. Not everyone chooses to drink during spring break, but providing information can be helpful for an individual or their friends.

Activities

  • Promote resting and recharging during Spring Break. Brainstorm ways to practice self-care with residents and how to utilize the time off in a way that sparks joy.
  • Review signs and symptoms of alcohol overdose and how to perform the Bacchus Maneuver. Find information here.
  • Stock up on safer sex supplies. Share information on how to access safer sex supplies with residents.
    • RAs can get free resources and low-cost condoms for hall events they organize by submitting a request.
  • Encourage students to complete the Longhorn Wellness Center’s Sleep Assessment to receive a Sleep Snapshot of where their sleep patterns and practices can use a boost.
  • Request a BeVocal workshop to learn about bystander intervention and how to take action to intervene in potentially harmful situations. Request here.
  • Follow or take activity inspiration from mindful UT’s Daily Mindfulness Calendar.
