Eligibility to Use UHS Services
Except for a few well-defined circumstances, only currently-registered UT-Austin students are eligible to use UHS services. Spouses and children of UT students may not use UHS. Exceptions to UHS eligibility rules follow.
- Students who aren't registered for the current semester, but were registered for the immediately preceding semester, may access services through one of the following two options. Post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and English as a Second Language program participants must use Option 2 to receive services.
- Option 1 - Pay a fee for each visit with a UHS healthcare provider plus any additional charges incurred for services, procedures, supplies, and medications used to diagnose and/or treat illnesses and injuries.
- OR
- Option 2 - Enroll in the "UHS Subscription Program" by paying a fee equal to the amount allocated to UHS from the tuition of currently-registered students plus any additional charges incurred for any services, procedures, supplies, and medications used to diagnose and/or treat illness and injury.
- See the UHS Subscription Program Brochure in Related Links for details on these two options.
- Students admitted to UT for a future semester, but not enrolled in the current semester are eligible for the following:
- At any time after admission to UT, these students may get required or recommended immunizations or screening tests. No office visit fees apply, but there are charges for vaccines and screening tests.
- Approximately one month prior to the start of the semester in which they will be enrolled, admitted students may begin using regular UHS services by paying a fee for each office visit with a UHS healthcare provider in addition to regular charges for services, procedures, supplies, and medications used to diagnose and treat illness and injury. See Eligibility Calendar in Related Links.
- Cooperative students, students who are enrolled and have paid fees at another university that has a cooperative agreement with UT regarding these individuals are eligible to receive UHS services just like a registered UT Austin student. Regular charges as detailed above apply.
- UT faculty and staff are eligible for certain UHS outreach and educational services, travel-related immunizations and/or medications, and special services that have been arranged and paid by their department. Office visit fees also apply for travel immunization appointments, in addition to charges for travel-related vaccines and/or medications. Charges also apply for certain educational programs. Faculty and staff with UT health insurance can fill their personal prescriptions, but not those of a spouse or dependent, at the UHS Pharmacy.
Subscribe to UHS
The UHS Subscription Program allows students who aren't enrolled at UT for the current semester, but who were enrolled in the immediately preceding semester, to continue to use UHS. It is especially helpful for students who aren't enrolled in UT summer school or who recently graduated from UT. The Subscription Program is available for only one semester immediately following a previously completed UT semester. University scholars who aren't officially enrolled at UT and post-doctoral fellows may also subscribe. See the UHS Subscription Program Brochure in Related Links for details, fees, and a program application.
Charges at UHS
Your student services fee allocation allows you to see the UHS healthcare provider of your choice as often as necessary with no office visit charges except for:
- Urgent Care clinic visits on weekends or after 5:30pm on weekdays
- Initial travel immunization appointments
- Routine annual women's health exams
- Routine physical exams
Charges also apply for most services, procedures, supplies, and medications used to diagnose and treat illness and injury. UHS charges are generally much lower than those for comparable services elsewhere. Examples of services with charges include:
- Lab tests and x-rays
- Procedures such as nebulizer treatments, IVs, and ear irrigations
- Casts, splints, and wound dressings
- Immunizations and allergy injections
- Medications
- Physical therapy treatments
Students who miss an appointment without cancelling with at least two hours in advance will be charged $25 (cost subject to change). To appeal a charge for a missed appointment, click Missed Appointment Charge Appeal in Related Links.
Payment Options
You don't have to pay at the time you receive medical care at UHS. We post charges to your UT Direct "What I Owe" page where you can pay online using MasterCard or Discover. You can also pay by cash or check at the Bursar Cashier office in the Main Building where they accept cash or checks after your UHS charges appear on your "What I Owe" page. You may pay at the UHS Cashier/Insurance office (SSB 2.106B) with cash, check, MasterCard, or Discover only for charges incurred on the same day.
To maintain your privacy, we do not post medical details to your "What I Owe" page. You can obtain an itemized statement in our Cashier/Insurance office. Be aware that if you've given anyone eProxy privileges to pay your bills online, they can see your UHS charges. However, they cannot see the reason for your visit, your diagnoses, or the specific services for which you were charged.
The UHS Pharmacy does not bill for charges. Payment is due at the time of purchase by cash, check, Bevo Bucks, MasterCard, VISA, or Discover.
Financial Bars
A financial bar will be placed on a student's record if payment is not received within 10 days of the billing date. The bar prevents a student from registering for classes or obtaining official transcripts or diplomas. Students must pay their bill in full to register.
Health Insurance and UHS
UHS does not file third-party insurance claims for charges, except for students with UT System-selected Student Health Insurance or UT Select (the UT faculty/staff health insurance policy). Upon request, we'll give you the documentation necessary to file a claim yourself for reimbursement with your insurance company. Check with your insurance company to see if you can file a claim and whether they will reimburse you for charges incurred at a "campus health facility."
The UHS Pharmacy, however, accepts most major prescription drug insurance cards. You pay the same amount for prescriptions at UHS as you would in your regular pharmacy.
Student Health Insurance Plan
Medical care can be expensive, especially if you are not covered for accidents or illness while you are away from home attending college. If you have insurance, check the status of your health insurance plan... then check out the Student Health Insurance Plan.
The Student Health Insurance Plan for UT students, offered through United Healthcare StudentResources, can provide that coverage if you need it.
The plan is affordable and designed especially for UT students and is approved by the University of Texas System.
Plan details are available online and online enrollment takes only minutes. Go to www.uhcsr.com/UTexasAustin and look for the pink button to enroll online.
ALERT: International Students may already be enrolled. Consult with the International Office if you have questions. www.utexas.edu/international/moving.html
