Katie Ray (pronouns: she/her) is a Counselor in the Counselors for Academic Residence (CARE) Program, a program that provides mental health services in academic offices to facilitate students' academic and life goals. Katie provides individual, group and crisis counseling for students in the School of Nursing and Dell Medical School. She is also available to provide consultation to staff as well as prevention and outreach services.
Katie's approach to therapy relies heavily on principles of client self-determination and autonomy. Katie believes that all clients already have the strength and wisdom to face the challenges in their lives, and she sees it as her job to empower them to discover and trust in that inner strength and wisdom. Katie believes that when therapy goes well, the supportive relationship between therapist and client can serve as a model for healthy relationships elsewhere in the lives of clients. She enjoys using humor and radical genuineness in sessions when appropriate. Katie utilizes a variety of treatment modalities such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) with clients to assist them in coping with interpersonal issues, stress, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder related symptoms.
Katie is a native Texan and has lived in Austin for the past 10 years. In her free time, you can find her reading, swimming in one of Austin’s many lakes, or playing with her dog.
