Healthyhorns Tips for Playing It Safe
Protective Barriers
External condoms, internal condoms and dental dams reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). External condoms and internal condoms also prevent pregnancy. Use a protective barrier every time you have oral, anal or vaginal sex. Know where to get safer sex supplies and how to use them correctly.
Contraception
Choose a birth control method that works for you and your partner(s).
Vaccination
Get the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to protect you from genital warts and cancer.
Communication
Talk with your partner(s) about healthy sexuality, including STI testing, pregnancy prevention and consent. Learn how to build and maintain a healthy relationship.
Get Tested
If you are sexually active, you should also get tested for STIs regularly and make sure you get yourself tested before you become sexually active with a new partner. At UHS, you can get easy, confidential STI testing. There are also multiple off-campus STI testing locations.
Avoid Alcohol and Drugs
Limit or avoid using drugs and alcohol before and during sex. Using alcohol and drugs can impair your ability to use barrier methods effectively and makes you more likely to take unintended risks.
Education
Continue to explore other learning opportunities. Being knowledgeable about your sexual health can increase your comfort level around taking care of yourself and help you make informed decisions.
